1608, a year before the expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain. María is 16 years old, she works in a lordship in the Valencia region alongside her father, a former alfaqi who once traveled across Spain spreading Islam in complete clandestinity. They must be discreet and live their religion in the greatest secrecy. But the Inquisition is on the prowl and falls on his father. Fleeing into the woods as he prepares to be burned at the stake, she falls, faints, and wakes up with no more memories. Alone, recluse in a sheepfold out of sight, María survives, but she is awakened every night by words and parables coming to her mind. It is the Qurʾān, which she had earlier memorized, which resurfaces to her. The young Morisco questions herself and wants to know more, about herself, and especially about these “revelations” which reach her. But for this it will be necessary for it to return to the harsh reality of its time, a time when Catholic Spain fought fiercely against the last manifestations of Islam on its soil.
